We’ve all heard of the USO, but many outside the military don’t know exactly what they do and believe they only provide entertainment for troops overseas. This is just part of their mission. Local USO chapters like the Greater Jacksonville Area USO – or USO Jax – provides a “touch of home” to military members and their families. This can include anything from care packages to calling cards to tickets to sporting events. They also operate a space in Jacksonville International Airport to provide a home-like setting to service members and their families who are waiting for their flights.
USO Jax is an affiliate of the national USO organization. They are not a government agency and rely entirely on public support. They operate three facilities in the area – NAS Jax, Mayport, and Jacksonville International Airport.
Below are several of the services provided by the Greater Jacksonville Area USO, taken from their website:
- Host more than 180,000 visitors each year at our three facilities
- Distribute over 12,000 USO Care Packages to deploying service members each year
- Operating free Cyber Cafes (with Skype) to keep families in touch
- Twice a month “free meals” prepared and served at the Mayport USO to young service members & families struggling to make it to the next payday.
- Distribute over 12,500 long-distance calling cards annually to keep families in touch.
- Help with deployments and homecoming celebrations.
- Space for family support groups, spouse organizations, education and more.
- Host and help more than1,000 visitors monthly arriving and departing from Jacksonville International Airport.
- Free and discounted tickets to movies, sports events, theme parks and attractions.
- Host special family events and activities.
