THE NEMOURS FOUNDATION
Using data as of: December 2014

Rating: RECOMMEND

About
Nemours describes its mission as providing leadership, institutions, and services to restore and improve the health of children through care and programs not readily available, with one high standard of quality and distinction, regardless of the recipient's financial status.

They are one of the largest nonprofits in the country dedicated to children’s health. Their core programs are pediatric clinical care, research, education, advocacy, and prevention programs. Nemours’ hospitals and clinics are located in Florida and throughout the Delaware Valley.

Our Analysis
Financial information comes from the latest public Form 990 filing.

Financial Overview

Nemours takes in a great deal of money – more than $1 billion a year as of last report. The bulk this revenue came from hospital operations, which added nearly $870 million. Donor contributions totaled a little over $154 million, with about $150 million coming from the Alfred DuPont Testamentary Trust, a private foundation with over $5 billion in assets.

More information on the Alfred DuPont Testamentary Trust can be found in the link below. The history is actually an interesting read - especially for Jacksonville residents - since it shows how much of an impact the DuPont family had on early Jacksonville.

Running a hospital is not cheap and though the Foundation brings in a lot of money, they must also spend a lot of money. However, 77% of spending goes to their philanthropic mission and 23% is spent on overhead. We like to see spending above 75% on the philanthropic purpose, so they are well within the acceptable range.

Spending on mission
798,581,961 ÷ 1,038,022,995 = 76.9%

One item we found curious was a fundraising expense of $3.9 million, as seen in column “D” in the image above. Fundraising events brought in only $1.08 million in contributions and “other” contributions amounted to $3.08 million. So with just over $4 million in contributions, $3.9 million in fundraising expenses seems excessive.

Our Conclusion
This is a good organization that does a lot to help the community. With the hospital revenue and DuPont foundation providing over $1 billion to the Foundation, the average outside donor just won’t make much of an impact.

If you do decide to contribute, donors can take solace in knowing that “100 percent of every contribution goes directly to support patient care, programs, services, education, research, and advocacy that benefit children and families.” LINK. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Nemours gets a RECOMMEND rating, but we think their large size limits the impact of an average-sized donation. If you are looking to make a difference, a donation of your time may have more impact than a financial donation.
