Our Analysis
First, the most recent financial data we could find comes from Dec, 2013, which we feel makes this analysis somewhat dated. We have received financial forms for 2015, but they are for the parent Mayo organization, not Mayo Jacksonville.

Second, the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is difficult to directly analyze since it is considered an affiliate of the parent Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Donations are not made directly to Mayo Clinic Jacksonville – they are made to the Mayo organization which then allocates the funds to the individual clinics if requested. This complicates our analysis.

That said, Mayo in Jacksonville relies primarily on hospital revenue to fund operations. They brought in $456 million as of last report, with $450 million coming from hospital operations.

The parent Mayo organization had $3.9 billion in revenue with $719 million in contributions - $260 million came from government grants and $360 million were donations.

The Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville does a good job spending money efficiently, with 88% of spending going to their mission. A “good” charity spends more than 75% directly on programs, so Mayo’s 88% is very good. They also have no fundraising expenses, though the parent Mayo clinic spends roughly 1% on fundraising.

Spending on mission
335,725,398 ÷ 380,757,030 = 88.2%

Our Conclusion
The Mayo Clinic is a good organization that spends its money efficiently, earning them a RECOMMEND rating. While a donation is always helpful, donors may find that an average-sized contribution will have a limited impact due to Mayo’s massive size. To really make a difference, a donation of your time may have more impact than a monetary donation.
