HOPE HAVEN
Using data as of: September 2016

Rating: CAUTIOUSLY RECOMMEND

About
Hope Haven provides specialized services for children and their families, with treatments for a range of educational, developmental, and mental health concerns. Their many programs include screenings, counseling, therapy, after school educational programs, and a Down syndrome center. They serve more than 5,000 families every year.

In September, 2017, Hope Haven named a new CEO with an extensive background in nonprofit management and children’s services. She appears to be a good fit, but it will take time to bear this out.

Expenses and Philanthropic Spending

Hope Haven looks to be fairly efficient with their spending, with about 89% of spending going to their mission. We like to see a charity spend at least 75% on their mission, so 89% is solid. They also have modest fundraising expenses.

Our Conclusion
Hope Haven provides a much needed service. However, they’ve run large deficits the last several years providing this service. A new CEO was installed in 2017 and it will take time to see how effective they are in reducing these deficits. Because of this, we give them a CAUTIOUSLY RECOMMEND rating.
