About
You know the Girl Scouts – it’s the youth program for girls that offers programs and activities to gain skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), the outdoors, general life skills, and entrepreneurship. Activities include earning badges, experiencing the outdoors, doing community service projects, and of course, selling cookies.

The Girl Scouts are one of the most popular charities in America and the Gateway Council serves about 13,000 girls in the Northeast Florida region.

Our Analysis

The Girl Scouts brought in $4.02 million in revenue according to their latest report. Unfortunately they had $4.38 million in expenses, resulting in a shortfall of over $360,000. This follows several years of losses.

The Girl Scouts are fairly small when it comes to contributions. Of the $4.0 million in revenue, only $326 thousand came from outside contributions. $175,000 was raised through campaigns and almost $200,000 from fundraising events. The vast majority of their revenue came from their cookie sales, accounting for $2.8 million in revenue.

The Girl Scouts spend about 80% directly on their mission. We like to see a charity spend at least 75% on their mission, so their 80% is within our acceptable range. They also have a fundraising expense of 8%, but this may be necessary in order to raise funds.

EXPENSES

TOTAL EXPENSES PROGRAM EXPENSES ADMIN EXPENSES FUNDRAISING EXPENSES
Total expenses 4,380,448 3,519,625 510,848 349,975

Our Conclusion
The Girl Scouts are a popular youth organization that does a good job serving their mission. Several years of losses have us concerned and we see a need for increased donations (or more cookie sales!). We give them a RECOMMEND rating.
