BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF NORTHEAST FLORIDA
Using data as of: June 2016

Rating: RECOMMEND

About
The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization matches at-risk children with volunteer mentors to provide a caring adult in their life. Most children come from a low-income, single parent household or have incarcerated parents. The majority of the children are mentored once a week at their school, while other children are mentored through outings and activities in their community.

The Northeast Florida chapter was formed in 1914 and is one of the oldest nonprofits in the state. Last year they served over 1,100 children and almost 98 percent improved their school attendance, 94 percent maintained or improved classroom behavior, and 93 percent were promoted on time to the next grade level.

Expenses and Philanthropic Spending

Big Brothers Big Sisters does well with their spending and nearly 86% of spending goes to their mission. We like to see a charity spend at least 75% on their mission, so 86% is decent. They have modest fundraising expenses, but don’t seem to raise much from that fundraising, either.

Our Conclusion
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida does a good job serving the community through their mission. They experienced a turnover of their CEO over the past year, but the successor comes from within the organization so there is not a lack of continuity. Also, we’d like to see a smaller board size – 24 voting members is almost twice as large as we’d like to see. All that said, we give them a RECOMMEND rating.
